TPACK&SAMR in Language Teaching

Hello!!!

Today I would like to say a few words about two terms called TPACK and SAMR.

These two frameworks emerged in language teaching because lately technology is a big part of life. To ease and create a better class environment, these two frameworks are needed.

     Let's learn what is TPACK is first. This framework is created by Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koehler. TPACK focuses on technological knowledge(TK), pedagogical knowledge(PK), and content knowledge(CK). It offers an efficient approach to problems that teachers are facing in implementing technology to classes. According to TPACK framework, some specific technological tools like software, application, etc. are very important to show and guide students with a better understanding of the subject.
      In TPACK framework, three types of knowledge- technological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge- are combined in various different ways. As you can see in the picture, they are;
  • Technological Pedagogical Knowledge
  • Pedagogical Content Knowledge
  • Technological Content Knowledge
      Since the day it is published, in 2006, TPACK has become one of the most popular frameworks that integrate technology with education(ed-tech).

       Secondly, I want to introduce you to The SAMR Model. SAMR Model is also a framework for the integration of education and technology. It is published by Dr. Ruben Puentedura. SAMR Model has four different stages. They are;
  • Substitution
  • Augmentation
  • Modification
  • Redefinition
      Substitution is the step that technology is integrated into education in a traditional, simple way. Augmentation has the same way for integrating technology into education but in this stage, educators wanted to ask him/herself if the technology increases student's productivity or not. These two steps, substitution, and augmentation are considered as "the Enhancement Steps".
      In the Modification step, technology is used for significant task redesign. It means that an actual change in the design of the lesson and its learning outcome. The redefinition step represents the peak of how technology can transform a student's experience. These two steps are called "the Transformation Steps".

     These two frameworks-TPACK and SAMR Model- are highly important in teaching language. Knowledge of these two frameworks can change a teacher's teaching in a very effective way.
